What Does Dodge R/T Stand for?

What does Dodge R/T stand for? You might not know the answer to that question yourself but have heard performance car enthusiasts use the term before. Here, Sayer Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram walks through the R/T designation, and why it should matter to Blackfoot drivers. Spoiler alert: If you’re looking for extra power and performance on the road, you should be looking for R/T in the vehicle you choose.

Road and Track History

R/T stands for Road/Track, or Road and Track, and designates a performance-level trim that first appeared when the Dodge Coronet R/T was released. Since then, Dodge has applied the label to the production of 29 R/T vehicles, with the 1968 Dodge Challenger being the most famous of those sold to the public.

SRT vs. R/T

R/T trims deliver enhanced performance features and specs, beyond those provided in standard Dodge trim packages. Yet SRT (Street & Racing Technology) models usually provide more as far as performance goes. The SRT configuration has one drawback, which is that they have a higher cost than the R/T, making the R/T trim a good fit if you’re looking for noticeable performance improvements with an affordable price.

Vehicles With R/T Trims

Not sure which R/T model to choose? Three different Dodge models provide the package when they’re purchased new:

Performance Features of the R/T

Exact R/T performance features vary by model, but you’ll find them all guaranteed to boost power under the hood. Examining this track-inspired trim, you’ll usually find:

  • Brembo Braking: Enable quick stopping power without overheating.
  • HEMI® Engines: Burly muscle provides iconic horsepower and torque in all the R/T staples.
  • Aerodynamic Design: Hood scoops, rear spoiler, and more give Pocatello drivers reduced drag and higher speeds.
